“Former UBC Professor Steven Galloway in Defamation Lawsuit”

Published:

Author and former University of British Columbia (UBC) professor Steven Galloway expressed his surprise upon learning about the sexual assault accusations against him. He stated that he believed he had ended his relationship with the former student, who made the allegations, on good terms.

In a lawsuit alleging defamation, Galloway explained that he acknowledged the relationship as “inappropriate, ill-advised, and foolish.” Despite the split in 2013, he claimed to have maintained a friendship with the former student, identified as A.B., whose identity is protected by a publication ban.

Galloway alleged that the woman and others defamed him by spreading the accusations online, resulting in the loss of his position as a professor and chair of the university’s creative writing department. He testified that the two had a consensual relationship for two years and that they met when she enrolled in a writing course taught by one of his colleagues in 2011.

He recalled being informed of the sexual assault allegation while in Ohio for an event in November 2015. Following this revelation, he had a distressing encounter with police at his hotel room due to concerns about his well-being. Galloway’s wife testified that he was deeply affected by the accusation and subsequent suspension and termination from his teaching role, which led to significant changes in his behavior and activities.

Galloway’s legal battle against defamation began in 2018, with ongoing efforts to clear his name. The trial, which involves multiple defendants accused of defaming him, continues to unfold in court. Justice Neena Sharma presided over the proceedings, emphasizing the importance of protecting the privacy and dignity of sexual assault complainants.

The court heard about the mental health challenges faced by both Galloway and A.B., with indications of suicide attempts and emotional distress. Despite the complexities of the case, the legal process aims to address the allegations and provide a fair resolution for all parties involved.
