A frustrated vacationer has leveled allegations against easyJet, claiming the airline repeatedly demanded him to prove his luggage size by fitting it into the sizer four times before allowing him to board his flight. Richard Deakin, age 37, was departing from London Luton Airport for a brief trip to Málaga, Spain on September 28, carrying only hand luggage. Despite facing difficulties in fitting his bag into the sizer, Richard insisted it was suitable, but airline staff disagreed. In a bid to prove his point, Richard had another passenger film him struggling to fit the bag back into the sizer.
The video, posted on TikTok, shows Richard persistently pushing his bag into the sizer until it finally fits. The clip, which has garnered over 106,000 views, captures Richard questioning staff about the fitting requirements. According to Richard, he was asked to retry placing his bag in the sizer two more times under the supervision of managers. Concerned about missing his flight, he removed some items from his bag. Richard, a security consultant, believes this to be a tactic to generate revenue and advises travelers not to pay additional fees if their luggage complies with the size regulations.
While some social media users supported Richard, others criticized him for his confrontational approach towards the staff. Richard, from Halesowen, West Midlands, expressed his frustration, stating that he was prepared to engage in a debate rather than comply with what he perceived as unjust charges. Following the incident, Richard encourages fellow travelers not to give in to excessive baggage fees if their luggage adheres to the guidelines.
An easyJet spokesperson clarified that customers are only charged if their bags exceed the allowed size limits, emphasizing their commitment to fair treatment of all passengers. They also condemned any form of aggressive behavior towards their ground crew. Once Richard successfully fit his bag into the gauge, he was not charged and was permitted to board the flight.
