Indian Actor Nana Patekar Dies at 75

Nana Patekar, a renowned Indian actor and filmmaker, passed away at the age of 75 in his residence in Goa, a state in western India. The cause of his death is believed to be a cardiac arrest, as reported by the Press Trust of India news agency, quoting a doctor from the hospital where he was declared deceased.

Vishawanath Patekar, born in 1951 in Maharashtra, India, had a successful career in both Hindi and Marathi cinema that spanned almost five decades. Known for his powerful performances, Patekar often portrayed intricate and unconventional characters.

His acting journey began in 1978 with the Hindi movie “Gaman,” followed by acclaimed roles in “Parinda” and “Krantiveer.” Patekar achieved international fame in 1988 through his role in Mira Nair’s Oscar-nominated film “Salaam Bombay!”

Throughout his career, he received three National Film Awards, the highest film accolades in India, and was honored with the Padma Shri, a prestigious civilian award in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over Patekar’s demise, lauding the actor for his unique presence and intense acting style. Modi commended Patekar’s versatility and creativity in portraying memorable characters that will endure through generations.

Nana Patekar is survived by his wife and son.
