A top football official disclosed that Lionel Messi expressed interest in joining the Saudi Pro League next season, aiming to gear up for the 2026 World Cup during the MLS off-season. Despite his recent three-year deal with Inter Miami, Messi explored the idea of a short stint in Saudi Arabia for training purposes, similar to past high-profile players like David Beckham and Landon Donovan who went on loan to European clubs.
Reports indicated that Messi’s team contacted Abdallah Hammad from the Mahd Academy for Talent Development about a potential four-month stint in a Saudi team. However, the nation’s sports minister, Abdulaziz Al-Faisal, rejected the proposal, citing that the Saudi league was not meant for training purposes.
Had the move materialized, Messi would have faced off against familiar foes like Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Nevertheless, Messi seems set to remain in North America until the end of the 2028 season, expressing contentment with his current project at Inter Miami.
Notably, Inter Miami’s co-owner, David Beckham, praised Messi’s commitment to the club and the game, highlighting the significance of bringing such top-tier players to the city. While the Saudi opportunity was declined, Messi now looks forward to continuing his journey in Miami and contributing to the team’s success.
Sky has also announced a discounted Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, offering a substantial reduction in price and an increased number of live matches, including over 200 Premier League games.
