Magpie Attack Leaves Chilean Cyclist with Severe Injuries

Published:

A woman in Australia, Marcela Montalva, faced a life-threatening encounter with a magpie, leaving her with severe injuries. Originally from Chile, Montalva had recently relocated to Ravenswood in the Australian Outback on a working holiday visa. Despite her aspirations to explore the country’s beauty, an unexpected incident occurred while she was cycling to a local post office during her time off.

During the bike ride, a magpie attacked her, causing her to lose control and crash onto the road, resulting in unconsciousness and significant injuries to her face. Montalva was airlifted to Townsville University Hospital where doctors diagnosed her with multiple fractures in her left cheekbone and a rare neck bone fracture due to the bird attack.

Reportedly, Montalva was fortunate to survive the ordeal, but she now requires urgent facial reconstructive surgery to restore her ability to eat and speak properly. Unfortunately, her travel insurance declined coverage for medical expenses, citing her lack of a helmet during the incident.

To fund her necessary medical procedures for facial reconstruction, Montalva has raised approximately $12,000 (AUD) through donations. Expressing disbelief at the unexpected turn of events, she emphasized the unforeseeable nature of the bird attack that led to her serious injuries.
