The Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) reported to The Associated Press that the Montreal Victoire’s edition of the Walter Cup, symbolizing the league championship, is currently missing. The league stated that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination as scheduled and is actively collaborating with the shipping company to locate it.
The trophy, which was meant to be delivered to Lethbridge, Alberta, for a day with Victoire player Dara Greig, did not arrive inside the designated container. Consequently, Greig had to postpone her scheduled appearances with the trophy, including a public event at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.
Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy during its travels to be with the players. The missing Walter Cup is a replica presented to the championship-winning teams to retain, distinct from the one displayed on the ice upon victory, which is permanently housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.
Crafted by Tiffany & Co., the missing trophy is made of sterling silver, weighing approximately 35 pounds and standing 24 inches tall and 13 inches wide. Adorned with six W’s representing the league’s original franchises, the cup features a base resembling a puck with the names of championship teams inscribed on it.
Following their triumph over Ottawa in a best-of-five series in May, Montreal became the first Canadian team to secure the PWHL title. The cup is named after Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra, who are the league’s founder and primary financial supporter.
