Mother’s £15k Loan to Rescue Son Injured in Dubrovnik Balcony Fall

Published:

A mother in a difficult situation had to secure a £15,000 loan to bring her son back home after he fell 40 feet from a hotel balcony in Dubrovnik, Croatia, despite having travel insurance. The incident occurred when Sarah Hannington’s son Will, 23, slipped on a wet surface while trying to hand something to a friend on a neighboring balcony during a vacation. Will, who works in furniture delivery, suffered severe injuries including a fractured femur, rib, and vertebrae, as well as kidney and spinal cord damage.

Despite the insurance coverage, the insurance company denied Will’s claim, citing the incident as “self-risk behavior,” prompting Sarah to arrange for his return home in a private ambulance, covering a 1,400-mile journey through eight countries over 30 hours. The family utilized Will’s European Health Insurance Card to cover medical expenses in Croatia, amounting to 15,000 euros (£13,000).

Sarah expressed frustration towards the insurance provider, emphasizing that the hotel confirmed the accident was not due to reckless behavior. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to assist Sarah in repaying the loan. Will, who miraculously survived the fall, is undergoing further treatment and rehabilitation in the UK, aiming for a full recovery and return to work.
