Amber Kissell, a 45-year-old mother, faced a challenging journey to her cancer diagnosis. Initially dismissed by doctors as having haemorrhoids, she experienced symptoms like fatigue, bowel issues, weight loss, and blood in her stool post the birth of her second child. Concerned about her health, Amber underwent a colonoscopy which revealed stage four colon cancer that had spread to her liver and lymph nodes.
Despite being told she was “too young” for cancer, Amber persisted and sought further medical evaluation. Following 12 rounds of chemotherapy, her tumors vanished, and she has been in remission ever since. Recalling the emotional turmoil she endured upon receiving the diagnosis, Amber expressed her fears and disbelief at the severity of her condition, especially with young children to care for.
Her journey included misdiagnoses and delayed treatment, with doctors attributing her symptoms to a fissure or haemorrhoids. Eventually, a critical colonoscopy confirmed the advanced stage of her cancer. The subsequent aggressive chemotherapy and surgical procedures led to a miraculous recovery, with scans showing the eradication of tumors and a positive outlook for her health.
Now, nearly a decade later, Amber continues to be in remission, requiring only annual check-ups with her oncologist. Her story serves as a testament to perseverance and the importance of advocating for one’s health, even when faced with initial disbelief from medical professionals.
