“Nackawic Entrepreneur Navigates Economic Turbulence”

Published:

Alicia Nicholson, the founder of Upfront Cosmetics in Nackawic, has been facing recurring storms this year. Established in 2019, Upfront Cosmetics experienced significant success, reaching nearly 600 stores in North America, with U.S. exports contributing to a substantial portion of the business.

As Nicholson expanded her business, adapting to U.S. tariffs by temporarily halting orders, and later re-entering the market, her husband, Troy, supported their family by working at the local pulp mill. Despite facing challenges, including the tragic loss of an employee, they managed to sustain their operations.

However, recent developments have brought new challenges. The Nackawic pulp mill, a significant employer in the town, is set to close on November 4, leaving approximately 350 employees jobless. This closure adds to the town’s history of economic setbacks, following the closure of the St. Anne-Nackawic mill in 2004.

Nicholson expressed concerns about the impact of the mill closure on her business. With dwindling sales and the loss of U.S. orders, coupled with Troy’s impending job loss, she emphasized the need to focus on the domestic market to sustain operations.

Following trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada, which led to tariff impositions on Canadian cosmetic products, Nicholson is left with limited options. She intends to concentrate on the Canadian market to mitigate the effects of the tariffs and ensure the survival of her business.

In an effort to boost sales, Nicholson plans to leverage social media and participate in various Christmas markets. Despite the challenges ahead, she remains determined to grow her Canadian customer base and secure the future of Upfront Cosmetics.
