“NHS Staff Facing Parking Fine Crisis: Calls for Action”

Published:

Frustrated NHS employees are calling for action following revelations that they have incurred millions in fines for parking while on duty.

Data from a small sample of 17 NHS trusts indicates that over 25,000 fines have been issued to NHS staff in 2024. If the average fine is around £60, the total fines could amount to £1.5 million, although the actual figure is likely higher.

Patricia Marquis, from the Royal College of Nursing, expressed shock at the scale of fines imposed on nurses. She emphasized the need for affordable and secure parking options to alleviate financial burdens on healthcare workers.

Numerous trusts cited third-party providers handling their parking fines, while some did not distinguish between staff and visitor fines. One nurse, Lisa Duggan, shared her experience of receiving a fine despite displaying a valid staff parking permit.

Ms. Duggan faced delays and ultimately paid nearly £300 while contesting the fine with a third-party parking operator. She criticized the lack of care and fairness in such situations for staff members.

The Mirror has raised concerns about the increasing number of parking fines and escalating charges, labeling them as an additional financial burden on diligent staff members.

In response, a Department of Health and Social Care representative assured that free parking is accessible to those in need, including NHS staff working overnight. The spokesperson denounced any exploitation or ill-treatment of hardworking NHS employees and stressed the importance of reasonable parking charges in line with local standards.
