Officer hailed a hero for daring storm drain rescue

A Saskatoon police officer is being praised for his exceptional courage in saving a teenage boy trapped in a storm drain by swift rainwater last week. The harrowing incident, which could have been life-threatening, was described as serious and frightening for both the teen and emergency responders by Sean Thody, the deputy fire chief present at the scene.

The incident occurred near the 3700 block of Kinnear Avenue around 8 p.m. CST on Aug. 14, prompting a police response. Upon arrival, officers discovered the young man stuck in the storm drain, wedged against the grate bars due to the force of the water. According to Thody, contending with such a strong water flow was nearly impossible.

The initial responder entered the drain, supporting the boy’s head above water until the fire department arrived to coordinate the rescue operation. Described as “organized chaos” by Thody, the rescue effort involved using tools to widen the grate openings and create enough space for the teen to be freed. The intricate operation lasted close to two hours before the boy was safely transported to a hospital.

The officer involved was commended for his remarkable bravery in assisting with the potentially life-threatening situation, as highlighted in a social media post by the police. The names of the individuals involved were not disclosed.

City officials disclosed that four teenage boys accessed the stormwater system through an outfall, with the storm sewers filling up as rainfall began. While three of the boys managed to escape, one was carried towards a grate-covered outfall and became trapped. Prior to the arrival of emergency services, the other teens worked together to shield their friend from the water, ensuring he could breathe.

Following the incident, authorities are cautioning residents against entering city infrastructure like sewers, bridges, or electrical substations, stressing that only authorized personnel should access these locations due to their extreme danger. The city encourages residents to report any compromised infrastructure to official channels for inspection and maintenance.
