“Pressure Mounts on Prince Andrew to Testify Before MPs”

Published:

Pressure is increasing for Prince Andrew to appear before Members of Parliament (MPs) as demands grow for him to testify before a select committee regarding the use of public funds. The 65-year-old is reportedly considering leaving his 30-room Royal Lodge residence voluntarily amid controversy over the nominal rent he pays for the Windsor property.

Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey has urged the Public Accounts Committee to investigate whether taxpayer money has been used to support Andrew’s accommodations. He emphasized that by tarnishing his reputation, Prince Andrew should not receive special privileges funded by taxpayers, stating that Parliament is responsible for safeguarding public funds.

Sir Ed proposed a select committee inquiry to examine how the Crown Estate has managed its support for Andrew and called for transparency in the matter. He has communicated his concerns to the chair of the Public Accounts Committee, Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, who has expressed intentions to seek additional information on the lease agreements for Royal Lodge.

Select committees, which gather evidence and report findings to Parliament, are being suggested as a course of action. Sir Ed also highlighted the need for government debate on the issue if necessary, emphasizing the importance of accountability and transparency in determining whether Prince Andrew has received any undue privileges.

Addressing the potential impact on the royal family, Sir Ed expressed the need to ensure their protection amidst the current circumstances. He acknowledged that discussions surrounding Prince Andrew have overshadowed significant royal events and activities, including the King’s engagements, such as his recent meeting with the Pope.

While calls in the United States for Andrew to testify continue, he denies any wrongdoing. Negotiations between Andrew and royal aides are ongoing, with reports indicating his reluctance to vacate his long-standing residence due to unresolved details about his future living arrangements and compensation for lodge renovations.

In exit discussions with the Palace, Prince Andrew has reportedly expressed interest in residing at Frogmore Cottage, previously occupied by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Meanwhile, his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, with whom Andrew currently resides, is considering a move to Adelaide Cottage once Prince William and Kate Middleton depart their current residence.

Regarding the provision for the Prince’s ex-wife, Sir Ed suggested that it is a matter for further deliberation by relevant parties.
