Vladimir Putin has finally spoken out regarding Donald Trump’s imposition of sanctions on Russia, issuing a stern warning to the US President. Trump’s decision to sanction Russia’s top two oil companies on Wednesday aimed to pressure Moscow into resolving its conflict with Ukraine. Despite a recent call between Trump and Putin that seemed to show warming relations, Trump expressed disappointment over the lack of significant progress made.
In response, Putin delivered a foreboding message at the Russian Geographical Society in Moscow, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over conflict. He stressed that dialogue is always preferable to confrontation or war, affirming Russia’s support for continued talks.
Following Trump’s remarks that his discussions with Putin often lead to nowhere despite being positive, Putin cautioned that Russia would strongly retaliate against any Ukrainian attacks if advanced US Tomahawk missiles were deployed. He emphasized that Russia’s response would be forceful, if not overwhelming, urging for careful consideration.
Regarding Trump’s evolving stance towards Russia, his spokesperson Karoline Leavitt mentioned that the sanctions were a fulfillment of the President’s longstanding commitment. Trump’s frustration with Putin and the ongoing conflict was highlighted, with Leavitt indicating that the President had always intended to impose sanctions when deemed necessary. She expressed hope for a future meeting between the leaders, emphasizing the need for tangible progress and a meaningful outcome. Leavitt also noted that any further sanctions on Russia would be at the discretion of the President.
