“Resilient Road Worker Overcomes Tragic Accident”

Published:

A determined road worker, Brandon Belshaw, suffered a severe leg injury on October 3 when his leg got caught in a resurfacing machine. Following the incident, he needed an urgent blood transfusion on-site before being airlifted to the hospital.

Brandon underwent multiple surgeries and spent five days on a ventilator during his recovery. He woke up four days after the accident to discover that he had lost his right leg. Described as resilient and positive, Brandon’s brother, Jordan Smith, highlighted his brother’s selfless nature and strength.

The accident occurred while Brandon was working in Doncaster, resulting in the closure of Leicester Avenue in Intake by South Yorkshire Police. Yorkshire Air Ambulance provided immediate medical assistance, including a blood transfusion, before transferring Brandon to Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital. Following further surgeries, Brandon regained consciousness on October 7.

To assist in his recovery, a fundraiser initiated by Brandon’s family has raised over £20,000. In a show of support, family and friends plan to undertake a 12-mile hike in the Lake District, including scaling Helvellyn. The challenging hike aims to symbolize Brandon’s perseverance and endurance throughout his recovery journey.

Inspired by Brandon’s annual trips with his girlfriend Emily, the fundraiser will contribute to his physical and mental rehabilitation, covering expenses such as physiotherapy and prosthetics. Additionally, funds will be allocated for any necessary housing modifications and transport adaptations to ensure Brandon’s independence. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance Charity.
