“Retired Couple Slashes Heating Costs to £40 with Innovative Energy Scheme”

Published:

A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, made the switch from a traditional gas boiler to a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat, which is then channeled into their hot water system, resulting in significant savings on their heating bills.

Previously spending £375 each month to heat their two-bedroom bungalow, the Bridges now report a remarkable decrease in their bills, ranging from £40 to £70. The installation of the data center occurred in December 2024, transforming their home heating experience for the better.

Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed his relief at no longer worrying about heating costs and the comfort it brings to his wife, who suffers from spinal stenosis. The HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify and part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, has not only reduced their heating expenses but also improved the overall warmth distribution in their home.

Praising the scheme, Mr. Bridges highlighted the effectiveness of the data center located in their shed, emphasizing its compact size and efficient heating capabilities. This innovative solution has not only optimized their heating system but also aligned with the mission to combat fuel poverty in the UK.

The success of this trial has sparked interest in expanding the initiative to more households, with plans to implement similar setups in 50 additional homes in the near future. The partners involved in the project are committed to scaling up these energy-efficient solutions to benefit a larger population, ensuring that no one misses out on the advantages of sustainable technology as the UK progresses towards a greener future.
