A deadly bomb attack carried out by Russian forces in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk resulted in the tragic loss of at least 33 lives, with an additional 18 individuals sustaining injuries. This targeted strike on civilians occurred on a street where two city buses were in operation at the time, as confirmed by local authorities. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy referred to the site as a bus stop.
Images shared by the police depicted a harrowing scene of bodies scattered across the street amidst debris, alongside the remains of a burnt-out bus. Regional governor Vadym Filashkin expressed that for the Russian forces, buses filled with passengers present an appealing target due to the potential to cause mass casualties with a single strike.
Despite the devastating incident, there has been no immediate response from Moscow regarding the attack. Russia has consistently denied intentionally targeting civilians, although the country has relentlessly bombarded various Ukrainian locations since the commencement of its full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Reports indicate an escalation in drone and guided-bomb attacks by Moscow’s forces on Kramatorsk and other cities within Ukraine’s defensive perimeter known as the “fortress belt.” Russia has demanded that Ukraine relinquish control of the remaining regions under its authority to cease hostilities, a demand Kyiv has adamantly rejected. Notably, Moscow’s advancements in the Donetsk region have notably slowed down over the course of this year.
In response to the escalating violence, Filashkin has issued directives to suspend public transportation services in Kramatorsk and Sloviansk, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety of citizens. This tragic event unfolded shortly after a significant Russian air assault across Ukraine, particularly targeting the nation’s power infrastructure.
Additionally, on the same day, three individuals lost their lives, and 14 others were injured in drone strikes on Kyiv, as reported by Mayor Vitali Klitschko. The ongoing attacks by Russian forces on the capital city persist due to the limited capacity of Ukrainian air defense systems.
