“Toronto Man Arrested in Scarborough MP Arson Case”

Published:

A man, identified as Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, has been taken into custody by Toronto police in connection with a recent incident where multiple vehicles were set on fire at the residence of a Scarborough MP. The charges against Crofton include arson causing property damage, mischief involving over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable materials, and failure to adhere to a probation order, as announced by the police in a press release issued on Friday.

In relation to the incident, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata suspected to be linked to the crime was seized. Authorities are seeking information about the whereabouts of the vehicle in the days leading up to the alleged arson. Additionally, law enforcement officers are actively searching for a second individual believed to be involved.

The arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid, who represents the federal constituency of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East. According to police reports, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles parked in the driveway during the early hours of August 27. The suspect poured an accelerant on two vehicles, setting them ablaze before quickly leaving the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the ensuing fire.

Zahid expressed gratitude towards the Toronto police following Crofton’s arrest, stating in a released statement that she appreciates the progress made in the investigation. She highlighted the ongoing nature of the inquiry, mentioning the lack of information regarding the motive behind the arson. Zahid, serving as a Liberal Member of Parliament for Scarborough Centre since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and holds the vice-chair position in the Canada-China legislative association.

Several political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the incident, labeling it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.” The case has garnered widespread attention and concern from various sectors.
