“Toronto Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Double Murder”

Published:

A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison before being eligible for parole after being found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder in the fatal shootings of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ontario. The sentencing took place in Welland, where Superior Court Justice James Ramsay highlighted the defendant’s extensive history of violence and firearms-related convictions, the execution-style murder of one of the victims, and the profound impact on the families of the deceased.

The victims, Christine Crooks, 18, from Toronto, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, from Windsor, were fatally shot during a birthday celebration at a rental property in Fort Erie on January 19, 2021. The defendant, known as rapper El Plaga, was convicted by a jury earlier in the year. During the sentencing hearing, family members shared emotional victim impact stories, expressing their deep sorrow and loss.

Court proceedings revealed that an argument between the defendant and Crooks escalated to violence, leading to her being shot multiple times. Subsequently, the defendant turned his firearm on Pannunzio, who was unknown to most attendees, and fatally shot her in what was described as an “execution-style” killing. The judge noted the defendant’s callous disregard for life and his troubled background, having grown up in a disadvantaged area with a history of gang activity and personal violence.

The prosecution argued for a 25-year parole ineligibility period, emphasizing the need to deter gun violence. Despite requests from the defense for an 18-year parole eligibility, the judge ultimately decided on a 22-year term before consideration for parole. The defendant chose not to address the court during the sentencing, displaying no visible emotion as he was escorted out.

Family members of the victims shared heart-wrenching accounts of their ongoing pain and loss, with Juliana’s stepmother describing the enduring grief and trauma inflicted on their family. The victim’s father expressed his profound sorrow over the tragic loss of his daughter, highlighting the void left by her absence. Juliana’s younger brother and biological mother also expressed their deep anguish and struggles in coming to terms with the devastating loss.

The tragic events have left lasting scars on the families of the victims, who continue to grapple with the profound impact of the senseless violence that claimed the lives of their loved ones.
