“WNBA Shatters Attendance Records, Grows in Popularity”

Published:

The WNBA’s latest season saw a surge in attendance, breaking records as star players, new teams, and a growing interest in women’s sports contribute to the league’s increased popularity. A recent analysis revealed that 3.79 million fans attended WNBA games in 2026, marking a 20% rise from the previous year. This growth was driven by relocating 25 games to larger arenas to accommodate the higher demand.

The analysis also indicated that eight of the league’s 15 teams had an average capacity of 90% or higher during the past season, with the league’s overall average at 83%. Experts, including Cheri Bradish, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, noted that the WNBA’s growth trajectory aligns with expectations due to its longstanding presence in the sports industry.

The 2020 season, known as the “Wubble” season due to COVID-19 restrictions, played a pivotal role in showcasing the women’s game to a wider audience. The increased popularity of women’s college basketball, driven by players like Caitlin Clark, has further propelled interest in the WNBA, leading to higher sponsorship revenue, new teams, and record attendance figures.

Expansion teams like the Toronto Tempo, the first WNBA team in Canada, have drawn massive crowds, with the team attracting over 20,000 fans to a game at Montreal’s Bell Centre, setting a regular-season attendance record. Ann Pegoraro, a sport management expert at the University of Guelph, highlighted the importance of striking a balance between maintaining interest and accessibility to games, suggesting that more games in larger arenas could become a regular occurrence.

The league’s growth has also sparked debates on social issues, with discussions on women’s rights, racism, and transgender inclusion in sports becoming more prominent. Despite some controversies, the WNBA remains committed to player advocacy and league development. As the search for a new commissioner begins, the league is exploring strategic growth opportunities, including playing in larger venues and potentially adding new expansion teams.

Suggestions to expand the playoff model to offer fans more games to watch are also being considered. Currently, the WNBA playoffs consist of various series, but experts like Pegoraro believe that providing more playoff games for the players would enhance the postseason experience and engagement for fans.
