A tragic incident occurred during a child’s birthday celebration as a car veered off the road and crashed into a group of guests, resulting in the death of one woman and injuring over a dozen individuals.
The collision took place late Saturday night in Bladensburg, a peaceful suburb near Washington DC, where attendees were gathered under a white tent for the festivities. Suddenly, a light-colored sedan swerved off the road and plowed through the tent, causing chaos among the families present, as reported by local law enforcement and emergency services.
Among the victims were eight children, ranging from one to 17 years old, who were caught up in the chaotic aftermath. Emergency responders described a frantic scene as they provided aid to the injured at the scene.
Witnesses reported that the driver recklessly accelerated and struck multiple people. Distressing images showed the car inside the tent, amidst overturned chairs, scattered decorations, and birthday balloons. Tragically, one woman, identified as Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez from Washington, DC, lost her life due to the injuries sustained.
Authorities confirmed that a total of 13 individuals were injured in the crash. While six children were treated and discharged on-site, one child was transported to the hospital and remains in stable condition. Additionally, three adults are currently receiving medical care for their injuries.
The 66-year-old driver initially fled the scene on foot but later surrendered to the police. Following questioning, prosecutors are deliberating on potential criminal charges against the driver.
“Six of the juvenile victims have been treated and released, while one remains in stable condition,” stated the Bladensburg police in a Sunday announcement. “Three adult victims are in stable condition at the hospital, one awaiting treatment, and one has been discharged.”
