A man who has reached the remarkable age of 111 credits his longevity to a daily indulgence in wine and sweets. Zhan Changcheng, a resident of Wanyao Village in southern China, was born on March 17, 1914, and has lived through significant historical events including World War I, the Warlord Era, the Second Sino-Japanese War, the Chinese Civil War, and 76 years of communist rule.
Zhan, who has nine children ranging from 59 to 82 years old, remains active and enjoys walks and card games with friends. He lives with four generations of his family, and his sons take turns caring for him. Described by his son as meticulous about cleanliness and appearance, Zhan starts his day early, brushing his teeth three times before breakfast, followed by a stroll in the garden.
Despite his preference for sweetened foods, even insisting on sweetened white rice, Zhan maintains good health with regular check-ups showing positive results. Having dedicated over 50 years to bamboo weaving, he is a respected figure in his community, having trained numerous apprentices. Zhan also shares his passion for weaving with friends who gather regularly for this shared interest.
While Zhan used to be a heavy smoker, he quit smoking a few years ago under family pressure. However, he still carries a pack of cigarettes to offer others. Embracing a simple lifestyle, Zhan finds contentment in modest living, valuing the simple pleasures of life. Wanyao Village boasts 22 residents over 90 years old, with Zhan being the second oldest person in China, just behind Zhou Renqing, who will turn 112 in November.
