A 31-year-old farm worker, Andrew Kane, tragically passed away shortly after being bitten by a fly. Andrew, who was described as a “big, strong lad,” was working on a farm with his sister when he noticed a red mark on his elbow from the fly bite. Concerned, his mother advised him to seek medical attention, leading him to the hospital where he received antibiotics. Despite not experiencing any immediate adverse reactions, Andrew collapsed during a night out just two weeks later and was rushed to Northumbria Emergency Care Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the horsefly bite.
Andrew, a devoted father to a seven-year-old daughter, spent weeks in a coma before passing away on September 18, with his mother, Rachel, by his side. Originally from Northumberland, Andrew grew up in a farming family and pursued a career as a contract farmer, following in his family’s footsteps. Rachel reminisced about Andrew’s passion for farming, mentioning how he also dabbled in painting and decorating in between farm work.
Despite his valiant fight, Andrew’s health deteriorated rapidly during his hospitalization. He was transferred to Newcastle’s Freeman Hospital and placed in an induced coma, showing brief signs of improvement before his condition worsened, leading to organ failure. Rachel shared that Andrew had a premonition of his fate and even in his darkest moments, he displayed kindness by asking for gifts for the nurses caring for him.
Rachel paid a heartfelt tribute to her son, emphasizing their close bond as best friends in addition to being mother and son. She expressed disbelief at the tragic turn of events, describing Andrew as a resilient individual. Andrew, survived by his daughter Skylar, sisters Antoinette and Ellesse, and nephew Hunter, will be laid to rest following a funeral in Morpeth.
