“Autistic Volunteer Lands Paid Job at Asda”

Published:

An individual with autism who dedicated over four years of unpaid work at a Waitrose store has received a job offer from Asda. Tom Boyd, aged 27, completed work experience and volunteered for more than 600 hours at the Cheadle Hulme store in Greater Manchester, according to his mother Frances. Following a request in July for paid work recognition, Waitrose informed the mother that Tom’s work experience placement had to end.

Frances shared that Tom has now been offered paid employment at Asda, with two five-hour shifts per week. When she raised the payment concern with Waitrose, the head office expressed unease over the extent of Tom’s unpaid contributions, leading to a temporary halt until the matter was resolved. Frances disclosed that she refrained from informing Tom of the reason for his work suspension to prevent upsetting him.

Expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support received, Frances commended Asda for their flexibility and understanding towards Tom’s situation. Meanwhile, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, condemned the treatment Tom received, offering assistance to secure a new placement. Frances acknowledged the local Waitrose store for their support but criticized the supermarket’s head office for their handling of the issue.

Frances stated that she would not pursue Waitrose for backdated pay, emphasizing the importance of young people’s voluntary contributions. The initial exposure of the situation with Waitrose was through a heartfelt Facebook post by Frances, highlighting the unfair treatment her son faced. Despite requesting pay for Tom’s efforts, Frances expressed disappointment in the lack of acknowledgment and recognition from Waitrose.

A spokesperson from Waitrose mentioned their commitment to inclusive employment practices, stating that they are investigating Tom’s case as a priority. The Mirror has reached out to Waitrose for further comments on the matter.
