McDonald’s enthusiasts are expressing frustration following the announcement of a significant modification to its loyalty program. The fast-food giant is set to raise the points requirement for earning complimentary items through MyMcDonald’s Rewards. Currently, customers need 5,500 points to redeem offerings like a Big Mac, Double Fillet of Fish, Double Sausage and Egg McMuffin, and Nine Chicken Nuggets. However, starting March 17, the threshold will increase to 6,500 points. Each pound spent at McDonald’s earns you 100 points.
For lower-tier items such as a Medium Coffee or Small Fries, the current 1,500 points needed will be raised to 2,000 points. Similarly, the points required for items like a regular McFlurry or an Apple Pie will surge from 2,500 points to 3,500. To obtain a Double Cheeseburger or a McChicken sandwich, customers will now need 5,000 points, up from 4,000 points.
In response to the community backlash on social media, one dissatisfied fan expressed discontent, while another inquired about the implementation date to redeem their points before the changes take effect. A spokesperson for McDonald’s informed The Sun that the adjustment in the loyalty scheme aligns with the escalating food and supply costs. They highlighted that while the points threshold across all tiers has been raised, several popular items have been newly added for redemption, including Chicken Selects, Cheese sides, and the new Sausage Sandwich, offering more choices for customers.
The loyalty program revision coincides with the introduction of McDonald’s new menu in the UK, featuring innovative offerings like the Surf N’ Turf burger, which combines two beef patties and a crispy white fish fillet patty with cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup. Additionally, the Chicken Cheeseburger, comprising a beef patty, a crispy coated chicken patty, cheese, onions, pickles, mustard, and ketchup, has been introduced. Customers can also enjoy the new Espresso Milkshake, a thick vanilla milkshake with a shot of espresso, and the Chilli Cheese Bites served with a tangy tomato sauce.
