“Storm Benjamin Looms: UK Braces for 90mph Winds”

Published:

Britain is preparing for potential disruption as Storm Benjamin is set to bring strong winds exceeding 70mph and heavy rainfall. The Met Office has issued multiple yellow weather warnings as the storm approaches, with the possibility of flooding, power outages, and travel disturbances in various parts of the country.

The storm is expected to intensify throughout Thursday morning, with the potential for damage to buildings, debris falling, and delays in travel. According to WXCharts data, powerful gusts are projected to start around 6 am, particularly affecting areas like Kent and Lincolnshire with wind speeds reaching up to 80mph.

As the day progresses, regions such as Norwich, Southampton, Oxford, and Swindon will also experience high winds and heavy rain. The southwest and Wales are likely to face strong gusts, while northern regions, especially Scotland, will see cooler temperatures as the storm system pulls in cold air from the north Atlantic.

By midday, wind speeds are expected to peak at almost 90mph in the southern half of the UK, including areas like south Wales, the southwest, the southeast, and London. Strong winds will persist in regions from Manchester southwards throughout the afternoon, with little change expected by 3 pm.

By evening, the storm is forecasted to move further north, affecting areas like Leeds, Bradford, and the Yorkshire Dales with gusts up to 88mph. The strongest winds are predicted to return to the southeast around 9 pm, with speeds possibly reaching 90mph in Norwich, Essex, Kent, and London.

Chief Met Office Meteorologist, Rebekah Hicks, warned of wind gusts potentially exceeding 70mph, with the possibility of even stronger gusts depending on the storm’s intensity. There is uncertainty surrounding the track and strength of the low-pressure system, emphasizing the importance of staying updated on the latest forecasts and warnings as the situation evolves.
