Homeless man sentenced to life for killing woman who offered shelter

A man without a home who fatally attacked a kind-hearted woman who had offered him accommodation in her £1.3 million residence has been handed a prison sentence. Apapale Adoum, aged 39, used a mallet to kill Victoria Adams, 37, in her apartment in Hammersmith, located in west London, on February 9. Adoum confessed to the crime of murder during a court appearance at the Old Bailey in August and was detained in custody. Today, Adoum was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years by Judge Nigel Lickley KC at the Old Bailey. Judge Lickley admonished Adoum, stating, “Victoria Adams was murdered in her own home. She had taken you in and offered you shelter.”

According to Judge Lickley, Adoum’s actions were a betrayal of the kindness and generosity of Victoria Adams. He armed himself with a hammer and carried out a brutal and savage assault when she requested him to leave. The judge mentioned that Ms. Adams’ family was left devastated and struggling to comprehend the tragic event. In a statement presented in court, Ms. Adams’s aunt Cathy Adams described Victoria as trusting, generous, caring, and fun-loving. She expressed sorrow that Victoria’s life was cut short after she had shown kindness to others.

Sophie Luff, Victoria’s younger sister, expressed shock and heartbreak at the news of her sister’s murder. She emphasized that Victoria had been trying to help the man who ultimately took her life, leaving behind four children who will now grow up without their mother. Ms. Adams sustained multiple injuries to her head from the hammer attack, and the murder weapon was found with her blood and DNA on it. The tragic incident occurred just three days after the victim had met Adoum at a homeless shelter and offered him a place to stay. However, she later requested him to leave in a note.

Victoria Adams was discovered deceased in a bedroom with a bin bag and pillow covering her head after police responded to reports of a potential break-in at her residence on Coulter Road. The murder shocked the local community living on the quiet terraced street. Residents reported hearing screams in the nights leading up to the discovery of Ms. Adams’s body. Ellie Scot, a neighbor, described the incident as shocking, highlighting that the neighborhood was typically peaceful with little trouble.

The Metropolitan Police received a call on February 9 reporting an attempted break-in at a flat on Coulter Road. Upon entering the property, officers found the lifeless body of a 36-year-old woman. The tragic incident left the community stunned and mourning the loss of a beloved member.
