Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua’s Driver: Charges Expected

Published:

Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is expected to face charges of ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic crash that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The driver, a 47-year-old individual who has been a key member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is anticipated to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, according to reports.

After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was transported to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred. He underwent several hours of questioning and provided an official statement detailing the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, two of Joshua’s intimate friends.

Joshua, who was also released from the hospital, accompanied his mother in paying respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home before their repatriation to the UK. A police source mentioned that the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. The source indicated that a decision on charging the driver for reckless driving is expected within 48 hours.

The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the police. Preliminary investigations suggested overspeeding on the part of the SUV Joshua was in, leading to a burst tire and loss of control before the collision with the parked truck.

Eddie Hearn, the chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed condolences for the loss of Ghami and Ayodele, emphasizing their greatness and sending prayers for all affected. In other news, Sky has announced a price reduction on its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, offering substantial savings and a wide range of live matches for the upcoming sports season.
