Anthony Joshua has returned to England following a tragic car accident that resulted in the loss of two lives. The British heavyweight boxer arrived at London Stansted Airport on Friday night and was then taken to his residence for further recovery, according to reports from the Sun.
The funeral for his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, is scheduled to take place at a London mosque tomorrow. Close relatives and friends have been invited to attend a ‘janaza prayer service’ in remembrance of the deceased friends.
There is uncertainty surrounding Joshua’s decision to attend the funeral, with concerns that his presence could attract unwanted attention.
Reports suggest that Joshua narrowly escaped the accident by switching seats just before the fatal journey that claimed the lives of his friends. The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. His lawyer stated that the incident was an accident and the brakes allegedly failed.
Kayode, aged 46, was driving Joshua and his companions in a Lexus Jeep when the collision occurred with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. After being discharged from the hospital in Lagos, Kayode was transferred to Abeokuta for further proceedings.
Joshua, upon his release from the hospital, paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home. He then accompanied his mother to pay final respects before the bodies were repatriated to the United Kingdom.
The case against Kayode has been adjourned until January 20 for trial, as investigations into the accident continue.
