“Legions in Canada Adapt to Attract Younger Members”

Published:

The Billy Bishop Legion in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area offers a unique experience with yoga classes alongside traditional veterans’ gatherings. Hannah, a 37-year-old attendee, finds solace and connection through yoga sessions at the Legion.

Across Canada, Legions are striving to engage younger demographics like Hannah by hosting diverse activities, providing affordable dining options, and fostering a sense of community. To commemorate the Royal Canadian Legion’s centennial, first-time members can now join for free nationwide.

While historically known for supporting veterans and hosting community events, Legions are evolving to attract new members and ideas. With over 100,000 new members in 2026, totaling over 300,000, the Royal Canadian Legion is embracing change and growth.

Despite recent closures of some branches due to financial challenges, Legions like the Bala Legion in Muskoka Lakes, Ont., have reinvented themselves by offering affordable dinners, concerts, and inclusive spaces. The Bala Legion is also planning to introduce 110 affordable rental units to sustain its operations.

President Dennis Mills emphasizes the importance of new memberships to ensure the vitality and relevance of Legions in serving their communities. Evolving to meet the needs of a changing society is crucial for the long-term sustainability of these cherished institutions.
