“Canadian Swimmers Shine at Pan Pacific Championships”

Published:

At the Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances on Friday night.

Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly event and later claimed a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team. These victories marked her fourth and fifth medals at the competition. In the 100m butterfly, the 26-year-old from Kelowna, B.C., set a personal best time of 56.71 seconds, finishing second behind American Gretchen Walsh, who won in 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins took the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.

Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her performance, stating that she felt well-rested and trusted her body to perform. McIntosh, on the other hand, had a disappointing outcome, winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle event after failing to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment in the morning heats.

McIntosh took responsibility for the error, expressing frustration and disappointment at missing the final. Despite this setback, she remained focused on her upcoming races. McIntosh placed second in the women’s 200m freestyle and claimed gold in the 400m individual medley earlier in the competition.

In the men’s events, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney won the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the competition, marking his first international gold medal.

Ruck led the Canadian women’s team to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event, where they finished in a time of 3:36.44. The U.S. claimed gold in the event, followed by Australia with the silver. The Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth behind the U.S., Australia, and Japan.

McIntosh is set to compete in the women’s 200m IM, where she holds the world record and is the reigning Olympic and world champion. The swimmers continue to showcase their talent and determination at the prestigious championships.
