“Food Basics to Replace Metro in Ottawa, Employee Displacement Concerns”

Published:

A Food Basics store will take over the location of a Metro grocery store in Ottawa’s South Keys neighborhood this autumn, leading to the displacement of numerous employees. Metro Inc. stated that the decision to convert the store was made to better cater to the area’s customer demands, emphasizing they regularly review their store network based on factors like local market conditions and performance.

The closure announcement caught Southgate Metro employees off guard, with long-time employee Justin Braganza expressing shock over the abrupt news. The employees were informed in May about the closure due to financial pressures such as increased rent and the store’s profitability concerns.

While Metro cited local market conditions and customer needs as the primary reasons for the change, employees were left uncertain about their future job prospects. The company clarified that workers could apply for positions at the new Food Basics store, with priority given to former Southgate Metro employees under the terms of their collective agreement.

Despite the agreement’s provision for job opportunities at the new store for a specific number of former Metro employees, concerns remain among affected workers. Braganza highlighted the challenges they face, especially with different wage structures at Food Basics that may not align with their previous roles at Metro.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union disclosed that negotiations with Metro resulted in enhanced options for affected members, including job opportunities at the new Food Basics store and improved severance benefits. However, questions have arisen regarding the company’s rationale for the closure and rebranding, potentially leading to legal disputes over labor issues.

While legal experts suggest that settlements between the union and the employer could resolve such matters, uncertainties persist among affected employees. Braganza lamented the loss of the close-knit work environment at Metro, underscoring the emotional toll of the store’s closure on the employees and community.
