“Canadian Petition Calls for Removal of U.S. Ambassador in Ottawa”

The originator of a petition urging the expulsion of U.S. President Donald Trump’s representative in Ottawa says the response has exceeded expectations. The online petition calls for Pete Hoekstra to be labeled persona non grata and for the Canadian government to seek his removal as U.S. ambassador to Canada. Over 100,000 individuals had endorsed the petition by Thursday afternoon.

Lee Walker, the individual initiating the petition from Calgary, expressed surprise at the overwhelming support. She highlighted the widespread discomfort among Canadians regarding Hoekstra’s alignment with Trump’s viewpoints on Canadian sovereignty and the nation as a whole.

The petition accuses Hoekstra of undermining Canada-U.S. diplomatic relations and intervening in Canadian political affairs in a manner inconsistent with diplomatic norms. It also criticizes his remarks suggesting Canada’s annexation by the U.S. as a potential discussion topic between Prime Minister Mark Carney and President Donald Trump.

Walker emphasized that such comments from an ambassador hold significant influence and normalizing such rhetoric could have serious repercussions. Hoekstra had also criticized Canadian leaders for their responses to the Trump administration’s trade policies.

The petition additionally calls for a parliamentary committee to review U.S. diplomatic interference in Canadian matters. The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa acknowledged awareness of the petition without providing further comment.

Amidst trade negotiations between the two countries, Walker emphasized existing tensions and the need to uphold Canada’s sovereignty. Canadian and American negotiators have been seeking a trade agreement before impending tariff increases.

The petition is scheduled to be presented in Parliament by Green Party Leader Elizabeth May. May noted the remarkable response from Canadians and emphasized the importance of citizens’ petitions in parliamentary discussions.

May contrasted Hoekstra’s approach unfavorably with that of past ambassadors, highlighting the need for diplomatic relationships. She cited a former U.S. ambassador under President George W. Bush as an example of diplomatic charm. May expressed astonishment at Hoekstra’s lack of popularity among Canadians.

The outcome of the petition presentation remains uncertain, but May sees it as an opportunity for vital conversations and a demonstration of Canadian solidarity. Walker hopes the petition will convey a strong message against inappropriate conduct by a sitting ambassador.
