“Canadian Flag Football Teams Advance to World Championships Quarterfinals”

Canada’s men and women have progressed to the quarterfinals of the flag football world championships being held in Germany. The men, with a 2-1 record, secured a place after a 37-28 loss to Japan, who dominated with five touchdown passes by quarterback Take Taniguchi. Despite the defeat, former CFL quarterback Michael O’Connor contributed with three TD passes. Due to Nigeria’s withdrawal over visa issues, Canada was granted a walkover victory. In the upcoming quarterfinals, the Canadian men will face American Samoa, who surprised by defeating the top-ranked U.S. team.

On the other hand, the Canadian women topped their group with a flawless 3-0 record following a 34-20 victory against Japan. Quarterback Sara Parker played a pivotal role, throwing four touchdown passes, including two to Caroline Moquin-Joubert. Their next challenge in the quarterfinals will be against Austria, with a potential semifinal match against the winner of Mexico and Spain awaiting the victor.

In a remarkable comeback, Alexane Fournier and Marianne Quirion also caught TD passes, while Frederique Morneau scored a rushing touchdown, helping Canada overturn a halftime deficit and secure a crucial win. Besides the quest for a world title, teams are also vying for a chance to qualify for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The top two finishers at the world championships will secure spots in the Olympics, marking the sport’s debut on the Olympic program.
