Serita Thurton netted two goals in the opening half as the last-ranked Calgary Wild caused an upset by defeating the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid 4-3 in a Northern Super League match held at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson put the hosts ahead with a goal in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton doubling the lead about 13 minutes later. Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young scored in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized at 2-2 one minute into stoppage time before the break. Thurton struck again just before halftime, securing her second goal of the game, which propelled the Wild to victory.
Jorian Baucom also found the net for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws. Jyllissa Harris scored a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-match unbeaten streak.
Despite controlling 54 percent of possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the game’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game before finding the net again five minutes into the second-half stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise controlled 56 percent of possession in the match and outshot the visitors 18-13, with a 6-4 shot on target advantage. The Tides earned four of the game’s six corners, while the Rise received two of the three yellow cards issued.
