Canada’s senior women’s national basketball team secured a strong start in the FIBA Olympic pre-qualifying tournament by defeating Senegal 72-57 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Kayla Alexander led the team with 16 points and seven rebounds, supported by Syla Swords and Delaney Gibb who contributed 13 points each.

Head coach Nell Fortner expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of the win against a formidable opponent like Senegal known for their strong rebounding skills. Canada dominated the offensive boards with a 15-8 advantage, with Tara Wallack’s four offensive rebounds proving crucial in creating extra scoring opportunities.

Swords made an early impact with three three-pointers in the first quarter, helping Canada establish a comfortable lead that they maintained throughout the game. Despite Senegal’s comeback attempt in the third quarter, Canada’s 26-14 advantage in points in the paint and efficient 52.5% shooting from that area secured their victory.

The game saw an even distribution of points off turnovers and close bench scoring, with Senegal holding a slight 31-29 edge in bench contributions. Following the win, Canada will have a rest day before facing the Philippines on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
