Golfer David McDonald, residing in Fall River, N.S., recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting an even-par 72 at Ashburn Golf Club’s challenging new course. At 85 years old, McDonald’s accomplishment of beating his age by 13 strokes was a rare and exciting moment for him. Despite the course’s difficulty with its long layout and fast greens, McDonald’s consistent performance showcased his skill and experience.

McDonald, who typically plays from the silver tees, covering nearly 5,800 yards, emphasized the importance of staying active and maintaining physical strength to continue enjoying the sport. He attributes his success to regular play and walking the course, highlighting the significance of staying fit as he ages.

Having faced some health challenges in the past, McDonald remains determined to keep playing golf regularly, believing that staying active is vital for maintaining one’s abilities. His dedication to the game, combined with a healthy lifestyle, has enabled him to continue performing at a high level and enjoying competitive rounds with friends like Peter Stirling.

Stirling, a close friend of McDonald’s, commended his impressive skills on the course, emphasizing McDonald’s commitment to walking and fitness as key factors in his success. Despite not practicing as much as before, McDonald’s passion for golf shines through in his consistent performance, with scores typically in the high 70s.

McDonald’s journey in golf began when he was stationed in Cape Breton with the air force at the age of 30. His natural talent for the game quickly emerged, leading to several accomplishments, including winning three national titles in military tournaments. Following his retirement from the military, McDonald continued to excel in golf, winning the provincial senior men’s championship for multiple years and earning a spot in the Cape Breton Sport Hall of Fame in 2005.

With a total of 17 holes-in-one under his belt, McDonald’s pursuit of his 18th ace reflects his ongoing passion for the game. He credits his longevity to a combination of healthy eating, consistent exercise, and the joy that golf brings to his life. McDonald’s dedication to golf serves as an inspiration for many, showcasing the benefits of an active lifestyle and a positive mindset in aging gracefully.
