“Southwest Saskatchewan Farmer Turns Dream into Reality with Scenic Rail Tours”

Published:

Gary Southgate’s dream of showcasing the “Valley of Hidden Secrets” in southwest Saskatchewan’s Frenchman River Valley has come to fruition through Eastend Scenic Rail Tours. Southgate, a farmer from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, has been working tirelessly for years to bring his vision to life.

His passion for trains dates back to his childhood, where he first encountered a steam locomotive passing through Biggar to North Battleford. In 2013, Southgate began collecting old trains, starting with a 1929 steam locomotive from the Canadian Pacific Railway. Due to the rarity of CPR trains, he shifted his focus to acquiring CN equipment to recreate the nostalgia of the old Super Continental passenger trains.

Southgate’s collection has grown significantly over the years, with numerous rail cars now under his ownership. He emphasized the importance of saving these trains from being scrapped, aiming to restore them for future use, potentially as part of a museum or as a source for parts.

Despite facing challenges, including disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the logistical complexities of managing the tour while farming 360 kilometers away, Southgate remains dedicated to his project. Eastend Scenic Rail Tours, in collaboration with Great Western Railway, has successfully operated several trips this year, with more scheduled rides in the pipeline.

Southgate’s ultimate goal is to establish a sustainable venture that not only preserves history but also attracts visitors to Eastend. With plans for additional amenities such as an RV park, a museum, and winter maintenance facilities, he envisions a thriving tourism hub that celebrates the region’s heritage.

Reflecting on his journey, Southgate expressed his desire to leave a lasting legacy and hopes that others will continue his work in preserving history for future generations. Despite the challenges, he remains optimistic about the future of Eastend Scenic Rail Tours and is determined to see his vision through to fruition.
