In Edmonton, two men sustained injuries at the Nanaksar Gurdwara temple during morning prayers when a man wielding a screwdriver disrupted the peaceful gathering. The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on the city’s northeast side, leading to the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect. The motive behind the stabbing remains unknown, with the Edmonton Police Service’s Hate Crimes unit handling the investigation.
According to Acting Inspector Eric Stewart, police responded to reports of a man walking in traffic before the stabbing incident. The suspect forcibly entered the temple and attacked two individuals before being subdued by quick-acting witnesses. The victims, aged 75 and 51, were promptly hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries, alongside the injured suspect.
The suspect, identified as having a history of violence and recently released from federal custody, faces impending charges. Investigations will delve into how the suspect strayed from his designated halfway house to the temple premises, where the violent altercation occurred.
Zora Grewal, the vice president of Nanaksar Gurdwara Gursikh Temple, recounted the incident where a temple priest and a volunteer were targeted during the morning prayers. Despite initial concerns about damage to Sikh scriptures, temple officials confirmed the sacred texts remained unharmed.
Expressing shock over the suspect’s recent release, Grewal emphasized the need for stricter monitoring of potentially dangerous offenders post-release. Both victims are expected to recover, with security enhancements under consideration for the temple to ensure a safe environment for all visitors.
In response to the attack, World Sikh Organization of Canada president Danish Singh urged Sikh communities to bolster security measures amidst escalating anti-Sikh sentiments nationwide. The gurdwara temporarily closed for investigation, coinciding with recent threatening calls received by other Sikh temples in Alberta.
Political figures, including Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the violence and emphasized the importance of safety in places of worship. Opposition leader Naheed Nenshi expressed solidarity with the affected community, pledging support for a thorough investigation into the incident.
