Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw competitions at the Diamond League event in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a winning throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt. She holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. American DeAnna Price took second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third at 71.95 meters.
In the men’s hammer throw, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., secured the top spot with a best throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now holds the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles in this event. Germany’s Merlin Hummel finished second with 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász claimed third place with 79.44 meters.
Moving to the 100m races, Canada’s Andre De Grasse finished sixth in the men’s final with a time of 9.96 seconds. Jamaica’s Oblique Seville won the race in a meet-record time of 9.83 seconds, with Kenny Bednarek of the United States coming in second at 9.87 seconds and Christian Coleman in third at 9.93 seconds.
In the women’s 100m event, American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden set a season-best time of 10.78 seconds to claim victory. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia finished second in 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson of the United States took third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
In a surprising turn of events, American Ethan Strand clinched the men’s 1,500m victory in a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech secured second place in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third at 3:31.16. The next Diamond League event will take place on August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, before the final in Brussels. The track and field season will culminate with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest from September 11-13.
Despite holding multiple titles, Camryn Rogers will not compete in the Ultimate Championship due to the absence of the women’s hammer throw event in the program. Ethan Katzberg, on the other hand, has earned an automatic qualification as the reigning Olympic and world champion in the men’s hammer throw.
