Tennessee plans to rename Nashville International Airport in honor of the late country music legend, Dolly Parton. Following a social media campaign by fans to commemorate Parton after her passing, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee engaged with Parton’s team regarding this decision. The renaming proposal, in alignment with the current Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority’s naming policy, will be discussed at a meeting on Sept. 17. The current policy mandates a waiting period of two years post an individual’s demise before any property can be named after them, as reported by The New York Times.
The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development is supporting this initiative, highlighting Parton’s significant role as a tourism figure for the state. Mark Ezell, the department’s commissioner, praised Parton as a vital ambassador for Tennessee, introducing millions of travelers to the state’s music, landscapes, and hospitality. Embracing classic hits like “Coat of Many Colors,” “Jolene,” and “I Will Always Love You,” Parton’s musical legacy solidified her status as one of the top-selling female artists, with over 100 million records sold.
