Ex-Saskatoon Police Sgt. Appeals Dismissal Over Biker Ties

Published:

A former Saskatoon police sergeant, Robbie Taylor, is seeking to overturn his dismissal over his association with a Hells Angels member. The police chief terminated Taylor’s employment in March 2025, citing his friendship with the biker gang associate as grounds for being unfit for the role.

Taylor has appealed to the Saskatchewan Police Commission after an independent hearing officer upheld his firing earlier this year. During the appeal hearing, Taylor’s legal representatives, Scott Hopley and Brian Pfefferle, argued that the decision to dismiss him should be reversed. They contended that while some disciplinary action might have been warranted, Taylor was still capable of fulfilling his duties as a police officer.

One key issue raised in the appeal process was an allegation of an abuse of process, which was previously brought up during a weeklong hearing in September 2025. The allegation pertained to a complaint received by then-police chief Troy Cooper in 2023, accusing Taylor of interfering in a traffic stop involving his unnamed friend. Cooper chose not to pursue disciplinary action, a fact that Taylor’s lawyers only learned about during the September hearing, which they deemed unfair and an abuse of the legal process.

Ashley Smith, representing the Saskatoon Police Service, argued that there was no specific document to disclose regarding the decision not to take action against Taylor. She emphasized that Taylor should have been aware that maintaining a friendship with an organized crime group member was unacceptable. Smith asserted that due to the breach of trust between Taylor and the police chief, as well as the importance of upholding public trust in law enforcement, dismissal was the appropriate course of action.

The panel of the Saskatchewan Police Commission, comprised of Aaron Fox, Leanne Lang, and John Ajioritis, has reserved its decision on Taylor’s appeal.
