“Julia Donaldson Reflects on Gruffalo Series Success”

Published:

Children’s book author Julia Donaldson recently discussed her journey with The Gruffalo series in an interview. Initially, she had doubts about the book’s success due to its dark storyline and rhyming style not being in vogue in 1999. However, the unexpected popularity of The Gruffalo led to the release of Gruffalo Granny, the latest installment in the franchise after 2004’s The Gruffalo’s Child.

In Gruffalo Granny, the original Gruffalo and his child prepare a feast for the arrival of Gruffalo Granny, who is renowned for her voracious appetite. The classic storytelling mouse once again faces a perilous situation.

Donaldson emphasized that her focus while writing is on creating a quality story rather than catering to a specific audience. Despite the similar creative process between The Gruffalo and Gruffalo Granny, promoting the new book presented a unique challenge.

The unveiling of Gruffalo Granny’s character at the British Library marked the start of a remarkable journey for the book. Within ten days of its release, it became the top-selling book in the U.K. in 2026, across all genres and age groups. With over 227,000 copies sold in the first three days, it broke records as the fastest-selling picture book in the U.K.

Alison Ruane, the managing director of Macmillan Children’s Books, expressed pride in the enduring appeal of Donaldson and Scheffler’s creations. The overwhelming success of Gruffalo Granny highlights the multi-generational love for the series, with adults passing down the stories to their children and grandchildren.

While Donaldson hinted that her Gruffalo journey might be concluding with Gruffalo Granny, she looks forward to her upcoming book, Winnifred Duck, illustrated by Jim Fields. This new story draws inspiration from the real-life incident of 28,000 rubber ducks lost at sea, providing valuable insights into ocean currents.

Donaldson’s passion for storytelling continues to captivate readers, ensuring her legacy as a celebrated children’s author.
