“FIFA President Infantino to Seek Re-Election Amid Controversy”

Published:

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed his intention to seek re-election, as announced by world soccer’s governing body. Infantino has been under scrutiny for his unsuccessful proposal to sell shares in the World Cup. Despite calls for his resignation, FIFA has stated that Infantino will pursue a fourth and final term in office until 2031.

UEFA, the governing body of European soccer, has been vocal in urging Infantino to step down, citing a loss of confidence in him and even considering boycotting FIFA tournaments, including the World Cup. Several national associations, such as the English FA, have also withdrawn their support for Infantino’s re-election bid.

During the opening of the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, Infantino declined to comment on his future. FIFA has acknowledged mistakes in its controversial plan to commercialize World Cup profits and vowed to prevent such errors in the future, but criticism of Infantino persists.

The deadline for candidates to enter the upcoming presidential race is November 18, four months before the vote. Infantino has expressed that he will address concerns at the appropriate time and place, emphasizing the enjoyment of football at present.
