Ben Shelton to Face Alexander Zverev in U.S. Open Final

Published:

Ben Shelton emerged victorious in an intense showdown against Frances Tiafoe, positioning himself as a potential end to his nation’s prolonged quest for another men’s Grand Slam champion. Shelton secured a hard-fought 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 triumph, setting the stage for a final clash against top seed Alexander Zverev at the U.S. Open on Sunday.

The eighth-seeded Shelton exhibited remarkable stamina following his elimination of defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a quarterfinal showdown that concluded in the early hours of Wednesday, marking the latest finish in U.S. Open history. To clinch a victory, Shelton must now thwart the French Open victor Zverev and grant the United States its first men’s major title since Andy Roddick’s triumph at the 2003 U.S. Open.

Expressing his determination, Shelton declared, “I’m fully committed to this opportunity and will give my all on the court. I urge everyone to support me. Let’s do this for the USA.” Zverev, on the other hand, advanced to the final by defeating Karen Khachanov in the initial semifinal, expressing his intent to prevent the realization of the American dream on Sunday.

The highly anticipated Shelton-Tiafoe encounter drew a star-studded audience, with notable sports figures such as Serena Williams, Jalen Brunson, and Trinity Rodman, Shelton’s girlfriend, alongside actors Salma Hayek, Ben Stiller, and Rami Malek in attendance. Both players delivered an entertaining performance, with Shelton, a 23-year-old Georgian, securing a spot in his maiden major final.

Tiafoe’s defeat marked his third consecutive loss in the U.S. Open semifinals, with the last two defeats inflicted by fellow Americans. Following a ceremony commemorating the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, Tiafoe initially displayed superior tennis, only for Shelton to mount a comeback by unleashing powerful serves, ultimately recording 20 aces.

The turning point of the match occurred in the third set’s final game, as Tiafoe struggled to maintain his serve. The protracted 15-minute, 20-point game culminated in Tiafoe’s error, propelling Shelton within reach of the championship. Zverev, previously regarded as the top player without a major title, seeks to capitalize on his recent French Open victory and Wimbledon final appearance by claiming the U.S. Open crown.
