In a tragic event in North Spirit Lake First Nation, a remote Oji-Cree community in northwestern Ontario, one individual has lost their life due to a shooting, while another person is now in police custody. The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service (NAPS) swiftly responded to a disturbance call in the community shortly after 5 p.m. CT on Friday.
The male suspect is currently in custody, and residents can anticipate heightened police presence as the investigation progresses. NAPS assured the public that there is no immediate threat to public safety following the incident. North Spirit Lake is home to approximately 430 residents and is situated around 530 kilometers northwest of Thunder Bay and 170 kilometers north of Red Lake.
The chief and council of North Spirit Lake First Nation expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the significant impact on the victims’ families and the entire community. According to their statement, the tragic event involved the shooting of two community members, with one individual in stable condition and the other sadly losing their life. The suspect is described as a stranger to the community.

The recent shooting incident in North Spirit Lake follows a similar occurrence in Constance Lake First Nation on August 29, where community members were advised to remain indoors during the investigation. Constance Lake, an Ojibway and Cree community located approximately 490 kilometers northeast of Thunder Bay, has a population of just under 900.
NAPS detailed that the Constance Lake incident involved an adult male victim sustaining injuries from a shooting at a residence within the community. The authorities swiftly contained the area, leading to a coordinated emergency and investigative response involving NAPS and OPP’s Emergency Response Teams, OPP’s North East Criminal Operations, and NAPS Northeast Crime Unit.
