Republican Senator John Curtis has urged the Senate Judiciary Committee to look into whether Donald Trump Jr. exploited his connection to the presidency for financial gain, following revelations that a Russian oligarch partially funded his recent wedding celebration. In a letter addressed to Republican Senator Chuck Grassley and Senator Dick Durbin, the committee’s top Democrat, Curtis requested that Trump Jr. be subpoenaed regarding his business dealings, relationships with foreign entities, gifts received, and instances where his ties to President Donald Trump were leveraged for personal benefit. Curtis emphasized the need for equal scrutiny of Hunter Biden, son of former President Joe Biden, stating that there should be a consistent standard regardless of the president’s political affiliation.
The call for investigation comes amid a shift within the Republican Party, with some members increasingly willing to criticize Trump due to various concerns such as the situation in Iran, rising gas prices, and apprehensions about the party’s performance in the upcoming midterm elections.
ProPublica initially reported that Umar Kremlev, linked to Russian President Vladimir Putin, contributed to funding a private island rental and fireworks display at Trump Jr.’s wedding in the Bahamas. While Trump Sr. defended Kremlev’s involvement, he stated that the expenses would be repaid. Curtis, who took office in 2024, has previously disagreed with Trump on policy matters and publicly denounced the wedding “gift” as corruption, vowing to address the issue further.
Curtis highlighted the need for continued scrutiny, referencing past investigations into Hunter Biden and emphasizing that investigations can be initiated by congressional committees at any time. Grassley previously led an inquiry into the Trump campaign’s Russia connections, including Trump Jr.’s meetings with Russians, and has conducted multiple investigations involving Hunter Biden.
Clare Slattery, a spokesperson for the Senate Judiciary Committee, acknowledged receiving Curtis’s letter but indicated challenges in scheduling a hearing by year-end due to the Senate’s limited timetable. Durbin supported Curtis’s request, emphasizing the importance of not overlooking the matter to avoid being complicit in a cover-up. Grassley’s past collaboration with House Republicans to investigate Hunter Biden was also highlighted, with the Biden family dismissing the investigations as politically motivated.
Looking ahead, Democrats have indicated plans to scrutinize Trump and his family’s financial interests if they gain control of Congress, with a focus on potential conflicts of interest. Rep. Robert Garcia, a senior Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, described the revelations surrounding Trump Jr.’s wedding as a significant allegation against the Trump family.
