“Quebec Senator Richard Martel Rejoins Conservative Senate Group”

Published:

Quebec Senator Richard Martel has rejoined the Conservative Senate group, transitioning from the Independent status he held since his appointment by Prime Minister Mark Carney in July. Senator Leo Housakos, the head of the Opposition in the Senate, expressed his approval of Martel’s move, noting that he seamlessly fits into the Conservative caucus.

Martel, who previously vacated his seat in the House of Commons upon his Senate appointment, expressed his satisfaction in joining his Conservative counterparts in the Senate. He expressed eagerness to contribute to the national security, defense, and veterans affairs committee.

Martel’s decision to align with the Conservative Senate group came after a period of Independent status following his appointment. This move follows the resignation of Martel, which led to a by-election in his former Chicoutimi-Le Fjord riding, won by the Liberals in August, further solidifying their House of Commons majority.

Upon commencement of their term, all new senators enter the upper chamber as Independents, gradually affiliating with a Senate group in the weeks that follow.
