“Chief Justice Urges Protection of Democracy in Turbulent Times”

Published:

Chief Justice Richard Wagner emphasized the vital need to safeguard Canada’s democratic institutions amidst ongoing challenges during the launch of the new judicial year at the Supreme Court of Canada. Wagner highlighted the escalating uncertainty globally, driven by increasing polarization, rapid events, and the swift evolution of artificial intelligence.

Drawing a parallel, Wagner likened democratic institutions to anchors that prevent societal drift during turbulent times, stating that their true strength is revealed in adversity rather than in calm waters. Addressing a gathering at the court’s temporary new location in the West Memorial Building near Parliament Hill, Wagner, accompanied by fellow Supreme Court members, underscored the pivotal role of the rule of law in upholding stability.

The Supreme Court has temporarily relocated as renovations are underway at its permanent home, the historic Supreme Court building, a project expected to span over 10 years. The court welcomed its newest member, Glenn Joyal, with a formal ceremony scheduled for the upcoming month.

Justice Minister Sean Fraser, speaking to a distinguished audience, highlighted the pressing questions posed by provinces, communities, and various groups about their positions within the Canadian federation. Emphasizing the importance of enhancing public trust in the systems that serve their interests, Fraser stressed the significant role of the law in maintaining national unity.

In a time where distinguishing truth from fiction is challenging, especially with the proliferation of artificial intelligence, Fraser underscored the critical function of truth-seeking by the Supreme Court and courts across Canada in upholding justice and ensuring societal well-being.
