Two-time Olympic judo medalist Sarah-Leonie Cysique from France was taken to the hospital after landing on her head during a semifinal match at the world championships on Tuesday. The incident occurred early in the bout against Akari Omori from Japan in the 57-kilogram category.
Cysique’s neck was secured with a brace before she was carried off on a stretcher, as reported by French sports daily L’Equipe. The severity of the injury is not yet known. L’Equipe mentioned that Omori executed a legal hip throw on Cysique, causing her to land on her head during the competition in Baku, Azerbaijan.
In the 57-kilogram division, Cysique claimed the bronze medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and a silver medal at the 2021 Tokyo Games. She also secured a gold medal in the mixed team event at both Olympic Games.
