The Canadian horse riding community is grieving the loss of three horses following an accident in British Columbia. The horses were en route from Manitoba and Alberta to Langley for the 2026 Equestrian Canada National Dressage West championship when the incident occurred.
The crash, involving a trailer carrying four horses, took place at 8:45 a.m. local time on October 6, approximately 40 kilometers east of Revelstoke on Highway 1. Sadly, three horses lost their lives, while the fourth sustained injuries.
Emergency responders, including paramedics from B.C. Emergency Health Services, were quick to provide medical assistance. The driver, a 73-year-old woman from Langdon, Alberta, was found at fault for failing to stay in her lane and was issued a violation ticket under the B.C. Motor Vehicle Act.
The equestrian community nationwide is expressing their condolences for the horses and their connections. Mackenzie Abbott, a dressage rider and head trainer from Headingley, Manitoba, expressed her profound sorrow over the loss of two horses she had trained, named Fearless and Rosaria. The horses were expected to excel in the Langley competition.
Equestrian Canada, the organizing body behind the event, has offered mental health support to those affected by the tragedy. Chief of Staff James Hood emphasized the importance of unity and support within the equestrian community during this challenging period.
